Sport Development and Coaching students increasing P.E. and School Sport opportunities in Lincolnshire

As part of their final year of study, students on the Sport Development and Coaching degree have been working on projects in schools across Lincoln which are designed to create additional P.E. and school sport opportunities. The projects are created by schools and development officers who identify a real need within their school that is currently not being fulfilled. This might be a sporting activity that is not on currently offer or may not be on offer to a particular group e.g. mixed ability groups or girls. All the projects aim to include a culminating event e.g. house tournament or a showcase event to feeder primary schools.  In addition the students try to make the project sustainable (which is not very easy) e.g. through recruiting young leaders. This year students have been working on the following projects:

  • Dodgeball for KS3 pupils of all abilities
  • Street Dance for KS3 pupils of all abilities
  • Pop Lacrosse for KS3 pupils of all abilities
  • Curriculum Contemporary Dance for KS2 pupils
  • Youth and Community Dance
  • Basketball for KS3 & 4 pupils of all abilities
  • Volleyball for KS3 & 4 pupils of all abilities

The projects allowed students to ‘make practical sense’ of the theory and knowledge developed through formal teaching. In addition, the work of the students added to the existing provision in the schools involved and the students gained valuable experiences in PE delivery, working within a school setting and project management – all useful skills for our graduates.
